Verb.

Introduction:

Verb is an action word that indicates action of the subject in a sentence.

Example: Eat, Work, Dance, etc.

A verb can be Doing verbs, Being verbs, and having verbs.

1. Doing verb: It indicates the ‘action’ or ‘work’ done by the subject.

v  For example:

Ø  The monkey jumped.

Ø  The thief ran away.

Ø  They dance on the stage.

ü  The words jumped, ran, and dance are examples of doing verbs.

2. Being verb: It indicates the ‘being’ or ‘existence’ of the subject.

v  For example:

Ø  I am fine.

Ø  He is tall.

Ø  She was sick.

Ø  They are present.

ü  The words am, is, was, were, has been, have been and will be, should be are examples of being verbs.

3. Having verb: It indicates the ‘belonging’ of the subject.

v  For example:

Ø  You have beautiful eyes.

Ø  Yes, I have two pens.

Ø  They had their own pens.

ü  The words has, had, have and having are examples of having verbs.



Main Verb and Auxiliary Verb:

1. Main verb: The verb that makes a sentence complete and meaningful is called main verb or principal verb.

v  For example:

Ø  The monkey jumped.

Ø  The thief ran away.

Ø  They dance on the stage.

2. Auxiliary Verb: The verb that helps the main verb and principal verb to complete meaning of a sentence is called auxiliary verb or helping verb.

There are two types of Auxiliary verb.

They are:

 

a. Primary Auxiliary: ( is, am, are, was, were, being, been, has, have, had, do, does, did)

 

b. Modal Auxiliary: ( can, could, may, might, shall, should, will, would, ought to, used to, need, dare, must)



Transitive and Intransitive Verbs:

1. Transitive Verb: The verb that transmits or transfers the meaning to the object of the sentence or the words that follow the verb is called a transitive verb.

v For example:

Ø  My father bought.     (What—No answer, Incomplete sense)

Ø  My father bought a car.  (What —a car, Complete sense)

 

2. Intransitive Verb: The verb that does not pass over or transmits or transfers the meaning to the object of the sentence or the words that follow the verb is called an intransitive verb.

v For example:

Ø  The child laughed.

Ø  The truth triumphs.
